Eskdale-Location

Each of our four beautiful cottages are within close proximity to each other in the village of Eskdale in the Western Lake District.

Eskdale is a beautiful valley with gently winding rivers for swimming, canoeing and fishing. There are as many walks as you can create including the Roman Fort at Hardknott Pass, Burnmoor Tarn and Scafell and Scafell Pike gateway to the Wasdale valley where Great Gable and all the Western Fells await. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway which runs along the floor of the Eskdale valley has a stop at Irton Road, just near Damson and Greengage Cottages and a 5 minute walk from Mite Villa and The Smithy.

There are 5 pubs in the valley the nearest is 5 minutes away, the Bower House Inn,  the next 15 minutes away, the King George IV and the others, the Brook House, the Boot Inn and the Woolpack can all be walked to and the return journey can fit into the Ratty’s timetable.

Please note: if you have satellite navigation, the recommended route often appears to be over Wrynose and Hardknott passes which can be very lovely but are incredibly steep (England’s steepest road with gradients of up to one in three), windy and narrow. Following this route is shorter in distance but certainly not quicker than the directions shown above.
